From Wonder to Endurance

A Devotional for Disciplemakers

I remember picking up my oldest son from school one afternoon. The moment he got in the car, I could tell something was up.

“Hey bud… What's the face? You okay?”

Silence. Then—

“Mom, my teacher told a story today about her mom having brain surgery. She went into so much detail. While she was talking, I just felt this huge wave of anxiety all over my body. I don’t even know why. It just made me feel really alone. I know God is real… but sometimes… I mean...I don’t know. I just feel alone. Does that make sense?”

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE!? I thought.

In that instant, I felt the weight of it. All of it. Not just his anxiety, but mine. My inadequacy. His unasked questions. My unsure answers. Like I said — all of it.

Most of us don’t wake up thinking, “TODAY! Today I will disciple my child!”

We wake up thinking about schedules. Coffee. Homework. Coffee. That thing we forgot to sign. Coffee.

And yet somewhere between the car ride and dinner prep, our teen says something that suckerpunches us straight in our soul — a question about faith, a flicker of doubt, a fear they can’t quite name. And in that split second, we're doing two things at once:

Responding…
…AND silently praying, “Lord, help me…”

That’s the life of a Disciplemaker

In your corner,

CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION

For You to Ask Yourself:
- Where do I feel inadequate when my teen opens up about their faith?
- What would it look like to invite Jesus into that insecurity instead of trying to cover it up?

For You to Ask Your Teen:
- When you have questions about God or faith, what makes it easier—or harder—to talk to me about them?
